The lowdown on floatation devices...

It's a hot topic in swim school circles, we don't promote the use of ALL floatation devices, however there are a couple that really hold value in the learn to swim process. Here's the low down on which ones and why?

The only floatation devices we promote are swim fins or the older style "back bubble" worn low on the hips. Why? Because they are the only two devices that allow your child to achieve the correct body position required for learn to swim. ie. horizontal, bums up, eyes down. We particularly dislike anything that keeps your child in a vertical position. eg. swim rings, floaties, vests etc.

The goal when using a floatation device during a class is to assist the child to achieve independence. A child may feel wonderfully secure when being held by an instructor and kick and paddle to their little hearts delight BUT when the instructor removes the support they panic or freeze. A floatation device helps bridge the gap. Once they realise they can still do it without being held, their confidence increases, and we are one step closer to independent movement.

Noodles are commonly used in many lessons, whilst a noodle is also good for achieving independence the swim fin or back bubble is better for body position and freedom of movement in the arms. They are also great in higher groups when there are issues with body positions in some of the different strokes, particularly use of the swim fin for back stroke, or when kids need to concentrate on a particular technical aspect. Back bubbles also allow you to remove layers and therefore the amount of support, essentially weaning them off the child.

We should emphasise however that, floatation devices do not remove the need for adequate supervision! We promote them as part of the learn to swim process and NOT as a babysitter.
